IML is an ambitious spinout company from the University of Cambridge. We are an international team of scientists, engineers, and company builders who are developing and commercializing cellulose-based materials.

About the opportunity:
IML is excited to be advertising one full-time position as Chemist/Chemical Process Engineer in our new and dynamic start-up. This is a unique opportunity to join the team as one of its first employees and start the journey with the founders.

We are looking for somebody to support our team in conceiving, developing, and transferring production processes of cellulose-based products to a commercial scale. You will be focused on the fabrication of cellulose materials in wet chemistry for use in different consumer applications. As a member of the R&D team, you will support and execute experiments to provide support during the process development across scales. We work in shared facilities at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge.

Applications will be reviewed as soon as possible as they come in, with interviews run for all shortlisted candidates. The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible in Spring 2022 (ideally 1st March, but this is negotiable for the right candidate).

The post will be a fixed-term appointment for 12 months in the first instance, with an extension depending on performance and funding available. The salary for this post is £25,000-£35,000 per annum, depending on experience.

In this role, you take responsibility for the following tasks:

Wet chemistry and process engineering for the extraction of cellulose materials from raw materials
Prepare samples for internal and external analyses
Analyse test samples and optimize the production procedures
Growing personnel responsibility with the growth of the team
Preparation of reports and presentations

What you need to be successful:

A technical degree (MSc, PhD) in the fields of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering
Knowledge and experience in the field of wet chemistry (chemical processing, mechanical processing, washing, drying) ideally with experience in cellulose processing
Experience in operating laboratory-scale equipment
Rigorous attention to detail in experimental execution
Ability to clearly document and execute complex experiments
An innovative mindset, with a passion for product development
Ability and experience to work under pressure to meet deadlines
Independently working, enthusiastic, confident, and self-motivated personality
